Grow your own picnic

There’s much to be said about growing your own picnic. Vegetables, fruits and herbs not only taste fresher, but harvesting your own greens also keeps more green in your wallet. And for those who think they might not have the thumb or the room for it, we’ve put together the following solutions for the most common gardening excuses along with suggestions for making it a fun activity for friends and family to share.

Excuse: I don’t know how to garden.
Gardening can be fun and easy, too. Amber’s Garden Mats make it as simple as unrolling a mat, throwing some soil and water on it and watching your garden grow. It’s even a great opportunity to let the kids take charge.
Excuse: The animals keep eating my herbwork.
If kitties, puppies and raccoons are getting into your vegetables, try a couple hanging garden options. Instructables has a great DIY vertical vegetables solution, and Apartment Therapy shares this hanging garden using repurposed rain gutters.
Excuse: The weather and sunlight isn’t consistent.
Plant a moving garden. The Food Map Container is a nicely designed mobile garden made with 100% post-consumer recycled food-grade plastic and is 100% recyclable. It’s literally green all over.
Excuse: I live in an apartment.
Apartment and city dwellers have many more options as the DIY and green movements continue to grow. These include WindowFarms.org’s open source year-round food harvesting initiative as well as Urban Garden’s pyramid containers for apartment balconies and small yards. Re-nest.com also posts 10 more solutions for growing gardens in small spaces.
